Oh Joy! Oh Rapture! Good news to report - a slew of new college scholarships in Ella's memory. You may not have known that Ella Fitzgerald actually liked school and she was a good student. Sadly, her access to education was very limited due to the difficulties of her early years. So, over the last 13 years, we have established a number of scholarships around the country and we have three brand new ones starting in September. All of our scholarships are awarded directly by the College (we are not involved in the selection process) and are given to bright, enthusiastic individuals who demonstrate financial need.

Here are our newest Scholarships:

California State University, Los Angeles

(fondly known as "Cal State LA")

The Ella Fitzgerald Memorial Nursing Scholarship through the School of Nursing

(just down Sunset Blvd. from Ella's house)

The Ella Fitzgerald Black Alumni Scholarship to be awarded to either a music student or a pre-med/pre-healthcare student.

*Special thanks go to Dr. Winston Doby and Chancellor Gene Block for helping make this possible.

The Variety Boys and Girls Club

Boyle Heights, East L.A.

The Ella Fitzgerald Memorial Scholarship A full community college scholarship for a deserving Club member.

*We could not have put this together without the help and devotion of Louise Simon, Robie Aguila and Mona Pastor.
