On Friday, June 10, 2005 Sotheby?s auction house in New York City will join forces with SCP (Sports Cards Plus) to auction off a plethora of classic sports memorabilia. Over 350 lots will be auctioned off in this treasure trove of sports relics, with items from all across the sports spectrum. From football to tennis, memorabilia from some of the United States? greatest athletes will be auctioned off in this monumental sale, which is expected to earn over $5 million.

One of the items on the auction block is a rare, 1917 Honus Wagner Silver Presentation Cup. The stunning, 10 ?? tall sterling silver chalice is engraved with the words, ?Presented to John P. Wagner ? Friday, June 22, 1917 ? Wagner Day.? The opposite side features Wagner?s sizable ?JPW? monogram. To further enhance this remarkable slice of sports lore, the cup is complemented by copies of newspapers from that area highlighting Honus Wagner Day and an image of Wagner at home with the piece.

The cup comes from the estate of Honus Wagner where it was proudly displayed for more than 75 years. It was presented by Mayor Joseph Armstrong of Pittsburgh in a heartfelt salute to Wagner celebrating his ?unretirement? and return to baseball for one more momentous year.
